OncoRNALab at Wetenschapsdag 2025
A Behind-the-Scenes Tour of RNA Research
On November 23rd, 2025, OncoRNALab was delighted to take part in Wetenschapsdag (Science Day) at MRB1. For this special occasion, we opened the doors of our laboratory and welcomed visitors for an interactive tour showcasing how we work with RNA in biomedical research.
Wetenschapsdag is a wonderful opportunity to bring science closer to the public, and we were excited to share what happens “behind the scenes” in a research lab. Throughout the day, we guided our guests through the key steps of our workflow, highlighting how a biological sample is transformed into meaningful biological insights through advanced molecular and computational techniques.
From samples to data: our full workflow
During the tour, visitors followed the complete path of an RNA-based experiment:
- Sample collection, where everything begins and quality is crucial
- RNA extraction, showing how we isolate RNA and ensure integrity and purity
- Library preparation, an essential step to prepare samples for sequencing
- RNA sequencing, where molecular information is turned into digital data
- Data analysis, demonstrating how we process, interpret, and explore results to answer biological questions
By guiding visitors through each stage, we aimed to show how research is built step-by-step, combining careful laboratory work with cutting-edge technology and bioinformatics.
Science communication and connection
One of the most rewarding parts of the day was the enthusiasm and curiosity of the visitors. We received many thoughtful questions and had inspiring conversations about RNA, sequencing technologies, and how this research can contribute to better understanding health and disease. Participating in Wetenschapsdag reminded us of the importance of science communication and public engagement. Sharing our work openly helps strengthen trust in research and encourages the next generation of scientists to explore careers in biomedical science.
